If you’re planning to explore New Zealand by car, you may encounter one of the North Island’s three toll roads. Unlike many countries, New Zealand has only a small number of toll roads, making them easy to navigate and use.
At Shore Rentals, all of our vehicles are registered to our toll account, making your journey hassle-free. There’s no need to stop, pay online, or worry about missing a payment.
The Three Toll Roads in New Zealand
1. Northern Gateway Toll Road (Auckland to Northland)
Located just north of Auckland, the Northern Gateway Toll Road is the most commonly used toll road for visitors travelling between Auckland and popular destinations such as:
- Orewa
- Warkworth
- Matakana
- Omaha
- Leigh
- Whangārei
- Bay of Islands
Using the toll road can save time and help avoid congestion, particularly during weekends and holiday periods.
2. Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road
The Tauranga Eastern Link connects Papamoa and Te Puke in the Bay of Plenty region.
This modern motorway provides a faster and more efficient route for travellers heading to:
- Tauranga
- Mount Maunganui
- Whakatāne
- East Cape destinations
3. Takitimu Drive Toll Road (Tauranga)
Located in Tauranga, the Takitimu Drive Toll Road offers a quicker route through the city and helps reduce travel times between key parts of the Bay of Plenty.
It is often used by travellers heading between Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and surrounding areas.
How Toll Roads Work With Shore Rentals
All Shore Rentals vehicles are connected to our toll road account.
When one of our vehicles travels through a toll road, we receive an automatic notification from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. This allows us to manage toll payments on your behalf, so you don’t need to register online or remember to make a payment after your journey.
At the end of your rental, any toll road usage will be charged to the credit or debit card used for your security bond.
Toll Charges
For each toll road journey, Shore Rentals charges:
$3.00 per toll road use (including GST)
This fee includes:
- The toll road charge itself
- Toll account administration
- Processing and payment management
For example:
| Toll Road Use | Charge |
|---|---|
| One toll road journey | $3.00 |
| Two toll road journeys | $6.00 |
| Return trip through the Northern Gateway Toll Road | $6.00 |
