Discover a vibrant dining district by the ocean – A laid-back beachside brunch or afternoon activities on the beach are perfect in Takapuna, with its stunning views of Rangitoto Island and the Waitemata Harbour. You can try stand-up paddle boarding, take a dip, relax in a café, or shop for stylish clothing and homewares.
Explore Devonport – Wander through the art galleries or shop for unique quality clothes and jewellery in Devonport, a seaside village. Visit Mt Victoria or North Head, two of Auckland’s volcanic cones, for 360-degree views of the Hauraki Gulf and back to the city.
Visit Goat Island for a day of water fun – Snorkeling and diving are ideal at Goat Island Marine Reserve thanks to its crystal clear water. Explore Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre to see colourful sealife up close and learn more about this unique environment. Alternatively, you can paddle a clearyak (a clear kayak) or hop on a glass bottom boat.
Explore the Hibiscus Coast – During any time of year, you can go skiing, snowboarding or tobogganing at Snowplanet, an indoor ski resort. You can enjoy summer water and beach activities in Orewa followed by a café lunch across the street.
Matakana’s wine and art – Visit the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market (on Saturdays) for delicious artisan foods, then wander the village’s shops, visit the art and craft galleries, have a coffee or lunch at a stylish café, or watch a movie at a gorgeous boutique cinema with chandeliers and gourmet ice cream. Explore Brick Bay Sculpture Trail after a wine tasting at one of Matakana’s boutique vineyards.
A day trip to Tāwharanui – Visit Tāwharanui Regional Park to relax on idyllic white-sand beaches. You can swim or surf at Omaha’s beach or take a walk around the park, suitable for all fitness levels. Bring a picnic since there are no shops nearby – there are plenty of insta-worthy spots along the way. It’s a great place to stargaze if you are staying for a while, since there are no city lights or houses blocking your view.
Take a trip to Pakiri Beach – Pakiri’s long white-sand beach is a must-see. Take a stroll along the water’s edge to watch the horizon for whales and dolphins often seen swimming nearby, or bring your surfboard and catch some waves. It is unpatrolled on the beach, so don’t surf or swim alone.
Take a relaxing trip to Kawau Island – A short ferry ride from Sandspit near Warkworth takes you to this quiet gem in the Hauraki Gulf. A fully restored historical mansion house, once Sir George Grey’s private residence, now features tropical gardens with exotic plants and trees introduced after his travels. In Kawau’s calm, clear waters, you can fish, swim, or cruise the beautiful bays.
Visit a regional park with the family – A visit to Shakespear Regional Park provides stunning views of the Hauraki Gulf, perfect picnic spots, scenic walks, and beautiful scenery. In Wenderholm Regional Park, you can enjoy the beach, picnic under a large pohutukawa tree, and explore the historic Cauldrey House. Hire a kayak from Puhoi and paddle up the river to Wenderholm for something a little different.
Take a trip to the North West – There is superb food, wine, adventure, and scenery just north of the city center. We recommend a wine tasting at one of Kumeu’s vineyards or eating at Riverhead’s historic tavern or Hallertau Brewbar and Restaurant. Try mountain biking, horseback riding, or the rope courses and flying foxes at Tree Adventures in Woodhill Forest. Take in the clifftop views at Muriwai Beach if you want to relax
